Colloquium Policies

Purpose - the colloquium is a talk by an established scholar in a field of broad interest. The speaker is the guest of the department and will meet with faculty and students. Suggestions for speakers are made by members of the research fields and the talks are allocated by field. Nonetheless, the speaker should expect department-wide attendance and should aim the talk at people from diverse backgrounds within chemistry. With this in mind, members of the department should make an effort to attend every colloquium. We expect to plan these far in advance and to avoid scheduling any other talks that would compete for attention.

Proposing a colloquium - there are forms posted that must be completed and submitted for approval.

Scheduling - colloquia are normally given on Friday morning. The specific scheduling must be done through colloquium assistant in the departmental office.

Hosting - each colloquium is hosted by a designated faculty member who helps arrange a schedule.

Travel - The department encourages economical travel: After a colloquium speaker proposal has been approved by the Colloquium Committee and the department chair, specific arrangements must be made according to policy in effect at the time in order to assure reimbursement. Please check with the office first.

Internal Colloquia - members of the department will be encouraged to speak in the program. Some of these will be named in honor of distinguished members of the department whose interests are related to the area of the talk.
