Miscellaneous
Some research groups have their own HP, SGI, IBM or Sun Unix workstations, and almost all groups have PCs and/or Macs available. All the Unix workstations and PCs/Macs are attached to the departmental Ethernet network, which gives full Internet access through the U/Toronto campus network.
There are public displays available in library, LM 480. See the manager of the Electronics and Computing Facility (Frank Bures), in room LM 436B to get a computer account on the departmental system (e.g. for e-mail) - only U/Toronto Chemistry faculty, staff, post-docs and graduate students can get accounts, and the filled form signed by the supervisor is required. Forms are available here.
The system also provides Anonymous FTP access to PC and Mac networking software, and some other software written by Departmental research groups. Large archive of PC oriented shareware and freeware for Win32, Linux (both i386 and Alpha) and OS/2 including official current RedHat patches and distributions and Microsoft patches can be also found at Electronics Shop Anonymous FTP. The archive is only accessible from the utoronto.ca domain.
The Departmental Electronics Shop is on the 4'th floor of the Lash Miller building and provides all electronics design and repair services for research groups, graduate and undergraduate students. The shop can design and build virtually any electronics equipment from simple power supplies to high speed digital circuitry and high power/high voltage analog devices.
The manager of the Electronics and Computing Facility is Frank Bures, P.Eng. (fbures@chem.toronto.edu), LM 436B, phone 978-5257.
