CD Burning Services

The Electronics & Computing Facility of the Department of Chemistry is offering a new service to faculty, postdocs, graduate students and staff.

Most of the members of the department have probably faced a problem how to store research data from a finished research project or data left behind bya graduating (and departing) student. Such data has been cluttering researchers' computers and taking valuable space. Some people would alsolike to be able to take their data with them to continue in their research at their new workplaces, etc.

Therefore we decided to offer a CD burning service to members of the department. If you want to have your data stored on a CD, please do the following:

  1. Place the data in any form (single archive file, copy of the directory treefrom your local machine, etc.) into your home directory on alchemy. Name the directory 'toburn'. If you need a software to facilitate the transfer of the data from your local Windows machine to alchemy, you can download it from ftp://frank1.chem.utoronto.ca/pub/NonUNIX/Win32/Software/filezilla_2_2_9_setup.exe
  2. Send an E-mail to stating your request for a CD archive. The E-mail must include your FIS numbers.
  3. CD-R, containing the exact copy of the directory 'toburn' from alchemy will be then burned for you and placed into your mail box on the first floor of the LM building. You can also specify a different type of CD-R delivery in your initial E-mail (personal pickup or any other). After the CD-R has been successfully burned, your 'toburn' directory on alchemy will be deleted.
  4. If these rules are followed correctly, you will be charged $11 per CD (1 hour of work and $1 for the media).

Restrictions:

  • We will not burn any copies of copyrighted materials, that the requesting party does not own copyright to. In other words, we will not make copies of copyrighted software, music files, movies etc. Of course, if you need a copy of a book or a paper you have authored, or software you have written, the restriction does not apply.
  • We will not burn any copies of any material not related to academic work, materials in breach of Canadian laws or any other irrelevant data.
  • Please, be aware, that the CD capacity is roughly 700MB. Make sure the amount of data in your 'toburn' directory does not exceed this limit. If you need to store more data, make additional directories 'toburn1', 'toburn2' etc., and mention the fact in your initial E-mail. Corresponding number of CD-R's will be burned for you.

If you have any suggestions regarding this new service, please do not hesitate to contact me at fbures@chem.toronto.edu or by phone at 85257.

Thank you for your continuous support.
