Obtaining Ethernet Network Connections

Information for new users

In order to get your personal computer (PC) connected to the departmental ethernet network (EN), several steps must be taken. Here is a short description of the process and what it would require from you and from the Electronics & Computing Facility (ECF).

  1. You have to obtain an approval for connection to the EN from your principal investigator (PI). The PI has to sign a Work Order and provide the ECF with his/her FIS numbers.
  2. You have to name the PC. You can choose any name consisting solely of lower-case letters that has not been used already. We suggest to use a short name that would be easy to remember.
  3. You have to specify if the PC is a desktop, or a laptop, its CPU model and clock rate, operating system used and its future location (room number). Please, write this information on the Work Order.
  4. Once you have the Work Order ready, please deliver you PC in LM 436 for checkup and configuration. We do not require monitors, keyboards or mice. However, we would require an administrator's access to your PC.
  5. Once the Work Order has been submitted and the PC has been delivered to LM 436 it is connected to the internal protected network of the ECF.
  6. If the PC runs MS-Windows operating system, it will be brought up to the latest service pack and the most up-to-date level of patches. The system will be configured for automatic updates.
  7. The UofT licensed Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition (NAV) will be installed on the PC. The NAV will be configured to update itself automatically from UofT servers.
  8. The SpyBot anti SpyWare software will be installed on the PC. The PC will be checked for presence of any SpyWare and the discovered SpyWare will be removed. The PC will be immunized against SpyWare.
  9. The PC will be checked for presence of any copyrighted material (movies, music etc.). If such material is discovered, you will have to provide the ECF with a proof that this material has been obtained legally. If such proof is not forthcoming and you still want to connect the PC to the EN, the material will be removed from the PC.
  10. Any P-2-P file sharing software will be uninstalled. We do not allow software like LimeWire, mIRC, KaZaa, BitTorrent and such on the EN.

If you do not agree with any of the above, you can choose not to have your PC connected to the EN. In that case, you can utilize our public connections in the Chemistry Library or Davenport Atrium. The instructions are available at our Information Technology section.
